DO NOT FEAR

Isaiah 41:9-13

You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth and summoned from its far-off places, To whom I have said, You are my servant; I chose you, I have not rejected you—Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand. Yes, all shall be put to shame and disgrace who vent their anger against you; Those shall be as nothing and perish who offer resistance. You shall seek but not find those who strive against you; They shall be as nothing at all who do battle with you. For I am the LORD, your God, who grasp your right hand; It is I who say to you, Do not fear, I will help you.

Reflection:

After the Psalms, Isaiah is the Old Testament book most quoted in the New Testament. Isaiah is one of the greatest prophets, and he appeared at a critical time in Israel’s history. His ministry and vocation as a prophet was commissioned with a glorious vision of God’s majesty. It is with the knowledge and spirit of God’s prophetic light that Isaiah will speak of a period about a century after his death. The Judeans will be taken into Babylonian captivity. Isaiah implores the Judeans to resist the temptations of the Babylonian religion. He works to invigorate and stir up their hopes for a return to Judah where they may worship God again. Now, more than ever, we need to be reminded of God’s words. In dark times of defeat and suffering, we may believe God has rejected us in our agony. However, take heart in remembering that God chose us first. He knows what our sufferings are before we even feel the first sensations, and like with the Babylonian captives, He has a plan to lead us out of exile. There is always hope, comfort and consolation for those who remain faithful because we know we have an almighty God.
