THE FLIGHT TO EGYPT

THE FLIGHT TO EGYPT

Matthew 2:13-15

When they had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.”

Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

Reflection:

God’s early plan for the Holy Family was a series of events full of upheaval and disruption. From Nazareth to Bethlehem to Egypt, Joseph faithfully obeyed the angelic directions from the Lord even though it may have seemed unfavorable or illogical.

God’s plans are mysterious but wise. The family found safety in Egypt upon escaping Herod, and it would lead to the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy (Hosea 11:1), “Out of Egypt I called my son.” The Bible teaches that the Israelites, freed from slavery, were led out of Egypt by Moses. Now, we are all freed from slavery of sin, led out of darkness by Jesus Christ.

The upheaval and the disruption, though unwanted at times, are the means through which God will lead us all to the new Promised Land of heaven.

Lord, help me to embrace these events with faithful obedience like Joseph.
